H-BN Powder: A Practical Material for Casting Crucibles

In the metal smelting and casting industry, the durability and corrosion resistance of crucibles directly determine production efficiency and casting quality. Thanks to the unique properties of “white graphite,” h-BN powder has become a truly effective material in the field of smelting and casting crucibles.

The most notable advantage of crucibles made from or coated with h-BN powder is their resistance to erosion by molten metals. It is completely non-wettable by and does not react chemically with the vast majority of molten metals, such as aluminum, magnesium, copper, and lithium. Unlike ordinary graphite crucibles, it is not easily eroded by molten alloys or subject to slag adhesion, nor does it introduce impurities into the molten metal. This is particularly true for the smelting of aluminum-lithium alloys, which are commonly used in the aerospace industry. Lithium is an extremely reactive element that readily reacts with most materials, yet boron nitride crucibles can reliably handle it, significantly reducing the risk of alloy composition contamination.

Its high-temperature performance is also highly reliable. It can stably withstand temperatures up to 1,000°C in air and even exceed 2,300°C in an inert atmosphere, without easily cracking or deforming even during prolonged high-temperature operation. Compared to traditional quartz and alumina crucibles, boron nitride crucibles offer superior thermal conductivity, ensuring more uniform temperature distribution throughout the crucible. This prevents casting defects such as cold shuts and uneven wall thickness caused by excessive local temperature differences, while also reducing fatigue cracks in the crucible itself resulting from rapid thermal cycling, thereby extending its service life.

In addition, its built-in layered lubrication structure prevents material from sticking to the inner walls of the crucible, ensuring smoother demolding and saving both labor and time during cleanup after each melting cycle. Furthermore, the material itself is non-toxic and harmless, and does not emit harmful substances at high temperatures, making it suitable for a wide range of applications—from aluminum alloy and precious metal melting to small-batch trial production of special alloys.

Many crucible manufacturers now use h-BN powder as their core refractory aggregate to produce customized boron nitride ceramic crucibles. These crucibles are replacing traditional materials in applications such as die casting, precision casting, and precious metal melting, helping factories reduce the frequency of crucible replacement and improve casting yield. They represent a highly cost-effective and practical choice in the smelting and casting industry.
